Academy Awards Movie Night

I know, it’s Super Bowl Weekend. I am not a football fan, and while I will be joining Ron and Jay for commercials and Madonna, my heart won’t be in the game.  Sal and Cindy are covering the Super Sunday Menu, I love the idea of Chowder Wars, but, I am totally apathetic as to who scores the winning field goal. If you are of a similar mind and control the remote, I suggest a movie night.

It’s just four weeks until The Academy Awards,  many of the nominated films are already on Pay-Per-View and DVD. Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday, you can even throw yourself a party.

The nominees are:

  • Moneyball;  I was not wowed by this film when I first saw it, but the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it.  It’s an interesting story, less about baseball and more about rethinking the way things are done.  Get some popcorn, peanuts, and Crackerjacks, Serve up some hot dogs (add the chili), nachos and beer and you’ve got a party.

  • Midnight In Paris;  I loved this Woody Allen, time travel, romantic comedy and it’s fun visiting with Scott and Zelda, Earnest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and the rest of that “Lost Generation” of the 1920′s.  I think wine, french cheeses, fruit and  baguettes would make for an elegant evening.

  • The Help;  The book was wonderful and unlike many good books, this one translates well to film. The ensemble cast gives life and warmth to a painful look at the American South in the 1960′s.  This may be my favorite film of the year. It’s not a party film and requires your full attention,  a box of tissues may be all you need.

If none of these films interest you, go out and see a movie, the rest of the nominees are still out there. You’ll probably get the best seat in the house.
