If you have room for them, chickens are a great addition to the garden. They eat bugs, slugs and snails and as they are strolling the garden they are dropping great fertilizer behind them. They are destructive in scratching the soil and can destroy newly planted seedlings and sprouting seeds. The Americana chicken doesn't scratch as much as other varieties and lays a pretty blue colored egg.
Cindy's answer: Fish oil and alot of brushing Sally's answer: You can purchase salmon oil at the pet store. It's especially good for animal coats in the winter months when their skin is dry. Just add a teaspoon to their food.
Yes. We had the house bunnies when my boys were little. We had them in two different homes. One big lop-eared rabbit who was a sweetie and cuddly. Years later we had a pair that ended up being brothers. One wanted to be free and ran off. The other was a good pet and we let him have the run of the house. He would go into his cage to pee and shit like it was a litter box. I have been told that you can train a rabbit to use a litter box. Robbin was with us for a long time. We could even take him out on the lawn and he followed us around and back inside. In the evening he would sit on our lap while we watched TV. He loved Popcorn and had huge sweet tooth. He found Halloween candy once and that was probably what did him in in the end... You have to be careful of what your pets can get at both inside the house and out.
Cindy's answer: Risky for two reasons.......may cause diarrhea and will certainly create a begging problem if the dog expects some reward every time there is people food around. If you do decide to feed some table scraps always put them in the dog bowl and feed at regular meal times. Sally's answer: Not a good idea because they get used to scraps pretty quickly. I would stick with dog food. I am weak, though, if you give them a little, it won't hurt.... just don't make it a habit or they'll beg all the time. Joanna's answer: I thought I had been careful with these dogs, but Pearl had on her own gone into the gardeners' lunches uninvited. I am guilty of giving scraps. It is probably best to always give scraps in their bowl so they know they aren't getting any at the table. I already blew that. I feel like they are feeling a part of the group when we are gathered to eat, but I usually wait until the end of the meal so they have to be patient. I know it is wrong but...
I just found out that Ferrets are the third most popular house pet in the country. I only knew two people with ferrets: my two sisters. One of my sisters had her ferret for forever it seemed.... 5 years maybe more. Lucy would sometimes get loose outside and then reappear days, weeks later. It is hard to keep a small animal safe from predators outside. Once an animal has the freedom to roam outside it is hard to keep them contained... even if you let them have the run of the house, they are curious and will want to seek adventure. It was very cute to see this little animal interact with the dogs. They got along very well. My dog OZ would probably not be a friend to the ferret.
Michele's answer: I know nothing. In Vermont I think you can have chickens on your roof if you want, but in NY, it's mostly pigeons. Fresh eggs are nice. Joanna's answer: Yes you can but you should check your local city and county ordinances. It can be fun to keep a couple of chickens in your back yard. If you are in a city or town neighborhood, no more that two or three would suit you and NO ROOSTERS…. Really … Roosters crow all night in the bright light of a full moon, and they crow before dawn. Unless you are in a rural setting then you should not keep a rooster.
It is hard to tell the sex with chicks. When purchasing chicks get pullets, they are supposed to be female, but every now and then some males get through mis-identified.
If you are having just a few chickens then you will find them very friendly as they are quite social creatures. I had one that became my house chicken… It followed me around the garden and I even let her in the kitchen where she would perch under the kitchen table on a cross support. Then some friends came to visit with their dog and before the end of the day my favorite chicken was dead… Murdered... Right in front of me. If you are traveling with a dog to friends homes be responsible. Do not let your dog wander without supervision. It is very inconsiderate to assume that your dog is welcome. If it is, then keep it under control.
Be sure to keep the water full and clean for the chickens and for your dogs.
Yes that is what they mean by free range but be careful about letting them run freely in a backyard because they can get into some trouble. They can eat your vines, flowers, and plants. They can wander happily into your neighbors yard or the road so you will need some kind of fencing.
Michele's answer:
I still know nothing, but fresh eggs are nice.
Joanna's answer:
Yes you can, but if you are in a neighbor hood you may need to clip their wings. Clipping their wings does not hurt them if it is done carefully and correctly. Ask you General Feed Store where you bought the chicks. Clipping their wings makes them very vulnerable to prey: a neighbors dog, a raccoon, fox. Remember that clipping their wings if you are in a larger yard or rural area may be a risk to their safety. I recently had a Hawk pluck a young chicken right off my lawn when I was near.
Free Range is a term used in the meat industry and we think these chickens have been treated kindly and have had a happy comfortable life while growing up to become our food or lay eggs for us. Evidently it doesn't always mean what it says. The rules for Free Range are suprisingly small range and closed quarters... Questionable still.
Try raising your own chickens for eggs. Just a few wll give you the occasionable eggs you need. One will lay 2 to 4 in the warmer months. They slow down to one a day in the winter... Somedays maybe even none at all in colder climates. They respond to light and warmth so keeping them comfortable will encourage them to produce for you when it is cold outside. Chickens are great for keeping the snail and insect populations down in the garden. They can be destructive to your garden though, and scratching the lawn and eating your newly sprouting vegetables... Some varieties aren't big scratchers and will be easier on your landscaping.
They make the sweetest noises, cluck cluck clucking along.
Of course you can't unless you clear it with them. If you think they might mind they probably will. It is often an imposition to bring your dog to other people's homes.
Michele's answer:
Was he invited?
Joanna's answer:
Yeah, was he invited? How well do you know them? Is it a dog you share with the boyfriend/ their son? Do you live together with this pet?
If they have a rambling yard and their dogs like other dogs and your dog doesn't chase their cat, then sure go ahead and ask your boyfriend if he would ask his parents. If it is a first visit I would just say "NO" and see how you all get along without the burden of needing to look after your dog.
I have a dog who is a sweety but is very territorial with other dogs. I have also had other peoples visiting dogs kill my chickens on an overnight... Not fun. I appreciate that most people have better behaved dogs than I have, but I would rather enjoy your company than worry about how my dog will behave with your dog. Let the relationship develop or wait for them to say " why don't you bring your dog along".
This is not the best idea as the dog can get tangled. It is too many hours to be unsupervised. Then if he gets barking neighbors will have a right to complain. Some places let you take your dog to work if they are well behaved. It is a big decision to get a dog if you must leave him alone all day. Dogs are social animals and generally stress to be without their beloved owner whether left inside or out. That's one reason many people opt for 2 dogs.
Sally's answer:
I'm not a fan of tying up dogs at all. When you leave for work, you should take your dog on a nice long walk before you go, then bring them inside. Hopefully you can come home to let the pet out at lunch. If you have a fence yard and a well behaved dog, you probably could leave the dog for awhile. You must be considerate of your neighbors if you have a dog that barks.
Joanna's answer:
It is hard to leave dogs at home. Cat's are simpler. I don't like to tie them up as they can get stuck on a short leash after wrapping themselves around a tree or even strangle. Tying up should only be done if you are home to keep an eye on them. Also if your dog is leash trained and you tie them up briefly outside a store as you are walking them and stopping for coffee. Although so many places are pet friendly now. If you have a small dog leaving them inside is safer than outside. Some of our dog breeds today are so small a hawk might pick them up out of the yard. Larger dogs are hard to leave inside as their "accidents" are not easy to live with. The best is to have a fenced in yard for larger animals. Small animals are more easily crated for the day or left indoors when they are house trained. Be sure that they are safe, especially if they are young as you don't know what kind of trouble they may get into yet. Some are chewers.... Some are attracted to anything that smells... You could save your self some stress if you keep everything out of their way when leaving them home alone. As they get older you will find out what they are still going to get into. Some dogs don't grow out of their bad habits. Training helps, but I haven't had a lot of luck with that. Cindy had a sock eating dog who came close to death several times when he had a sock stuck in his intestine... Dear Ollie... He was a BIG DOG... Rest in Peace.
I don't know, but I would hope they do when they are happy. I do think it is so sad when I heard they were used to protect miners deep underground to let them know when the oxygen was running out. The dead canary... Canary in a Coal Mine by the Police... not a great place for the canary.
In the cities and suburbs you do or you can get a fine. It is courteous to pick up after your dog anywhere that people are walking.
Michele's answer:
This is a question that I think we have to re-think. You are taking something natural and organic and putting it in a plastic bag and throwing it away. Yes, You do need to clean up after your dog in the city, in a public place where it could be stepped on or on your neighbor's lawn, it's the law in many places. But, in some public places, I'm thinking it might be OK to shovel the shit into a wooded area instead of wrapping it in plastic and finding the nearest garbage can. You can train your dog to do his/her business where you want him/her to go. Take him out on leash and reward him/her for going in the place you have chosen. And if that place is in your suburban back-yard, have a way to shovel it where it is needed, it will make the flowers grow.
Joanna's answer:
Clean up after your dog whether it is your neighborhood sidewalk or your own back yard. I live on some acreage and thankfully the dogs go far into the woods usually to do their business. Everynow and then they shit on the lawn and I think it is too insult me aor to mark the territory for the wild animals to know they are present.
When visiting a friend and your dog shits in the yard, front or back, please clean it up. Put it in their trash. I see what Michelle is saying about plastic and we don't need to use extra plastic at a home site so find some old newspaper perhaps and roll it up and put it in your friends trash cans. Don't just throw it in with a shovel or the shit may be stuck on the can itself if it isn't lined with plastic. When you are in a rural area just be aware of what your hosts dog does and if they shit on the lawn or lanscaped areas please pick it up. Ask your host where they want it deposited, otherwise they will be cursing your dog and you when you leave.
Cindy's answer: Yes, they have personality and can be taken out of the cage. They like affection and can even be taught little tricks. Joanna's answer: I haven't had a bird as pet since I was a child. We had cockateels. We found one by our swimming pool one day. We welcomed Skipper into our dining room where our large family spent lots of time. He seemed to enjoy our company. I think that birds need to be in a social situation, so if you are not home very much, a bird is not a great pet for you. Please please consider your decision to have pets if you are not at home or frequently travel.
Cindy's answer: If you are the lucky one to find it right away than you must deal with it immediately for best results. Blot out what you can with a paper towel (so you can throw it away). Use Resolve spray and blot again. Vinegar is a good neutralizer so the pet isn't attracted to the spot again. Sally's answer: After blotting and washing the area several times, pour on a odor neutralizer (white vinegar or a product from the pet store) to rid the area of smell. The pet will probably use that spot again if not taken care of. Michele's answer: First blot the wet stain up with a white towel or paper towels, get as much up as you can. Use dish soap and warm water and gently wash the area by hand. Keep blotting with dry towels. It's important to get the stain while it's still wet. If this doesn't work, get rid of the pet! Joanna's answer: This happens way too often in my house... Pearl (that bitch) has a lot of attitude when I am away from home and lets me know that she is "pissed". I pour water on it as soon as I find it and grab an old towel and step on it to soak it into the towel. She is a big dog and so she holds a lot of pee and it usually takes a few towels until I feel I have it clean. That is a reason to use a white towel, when you think you have it soak up you can be sure of it if you use a white towel and it looks pretty clean. When you are young and just starting out, you usually don't have "old" towels. Good luck with that... it takes a few years to develop your own old towel collection. Small dogs are easy with paper towels.
Cindy's answer: This is a tough one. The dog is guarding and alerting you that someone is invading their territory. This is a natural response for a dog and one that can be good unless the dog cant calm dow. I would try petting the dog to lessen the anxiety....if you yell the dog may think you're barking too!
Cindy's answer: Twice.....breakfast and dinner. Many vets say once is fine but the dog must be happier with twice....who wouldn't? Sally's answer: Usually twice a day like Cindy said. Joanna's answer: I feed my dogs once a day. Sometimes when I am eating in the evening I give them a snack, or I give them a Greenie (a dog snack dental) when I am watching TV. I have one dog that needs to lose weight and one who needs to gain weight so it is a hard balance. The thin wiry one isn't interested in some treats, and the larger one will pick up a loaf of moldy bread from the compost if I am not careful. It is difficult at times to watch them. Rather like having two year-olds who are always trying to touch what they shouldn't and everything goes into their mouths.
Cindy's answer: A box turtle doesn't make a great pet because they hibernate in winter and eat insects. Joanna's answer: It is good to call the humane society or native animal rescue and they can advise you if you wish to try to take care of it. I had a friend who was a foster home to native turtles found injured and in unsafe conditions. They cared for many in a small yard space with a water element.
Even if the dog seems to be unsocial with other dogs, if it is his home then his dog deserves to be the free dog here. Please be sensitive and ask before just showing up with your dog. No matter how sweet and well socialized your dog is, you don't know how the home owner feels about having other peoples pets around. Even pet allergies can make it difficult for some of my friends to give me a hug if I have a cat or rabbit that I have been in proximity with.
Cindy's answer: I use raw eggs... good for the coat. Sally's answer: If you have left over chicken or beef, cut that up and add some rice. Joanna's answer: Scramble them some eggs. Also if you have some left over meat you can cut some up.... a little leftover rice. Stir a raw egg in the leftover rice even...
michele Says: Eggs work fine cooked or not. Spike eats everything, including our leftovers and very expensive parmesan cheese if we leave it on the table.
Cindy's answer: RESPECT all animals especially the ones who are family members.... never allow your friends to use your dog for laughs either. Sally's answer: Absolutely not and make sure your friends don't do this either. Joanna's answer: My son was saying his friend's dog loves to lick up spilled beer. This is probably not the worst thing as long as a lot isn't poured on the floor. Do not take advantage of your pets. They need you to treat them with respect and love. If you have a dog who seems to like beer, be careful at parties that your dog isn't getting into the cups and drinking too much without your knowledge.
I don't know, where are you seeing them? This has been a weird winter and while rabbits usually find a safe place to hide from the wind and cold, in a winter with little or no snow, they will come out and forage. I throw fruit and veggies that have past their prime out back, bringing rabbits, foxes and deer to the property. (we live in the woods, in the middle of nowhere) It drives the dog crazy when they come, but I enjoy watching them. Check out this sweet little site, I checked my rabbit facts here.
Cindy's answer: I have heard of dogs getting very sick from eating chocolate and you should call the vet and he/she can guide you, especially if you know just how much chocolate your pet ate. Sally's answer: Call the vet. They'll probably want you to bring your dog in for an examine. Winnie, our Springer Spaniel ate an entire 5 lb box of chocolate at Valentines Day. She pooped and threw up for days. I did take her to the vet and they gave her medication. Joanna's answer: I have always heard that Chocolate is very bad for dogs. My dog Pearl seems to have a taste for it lately. She finds it on the counter and steals it in the middle of the night. I have been told now that it is large quantities of dark chocolate that is very toxic for dogs. It can be very difficult to keep your animals safe. They are such characters and will try to get things they want when you turn their back... I have some very untrained dogs with poor manners. I have tried but have not been consistent enough with them I guess.
DAVE Says: Chocolate can be very bad , even fatal for dogs- there might not be time to get to a vet right away....
If its three in the morning and you hear the dog rustling under the Christmas tree, then find her her half way through a box of See's candy. the best thing to do is make lots of black burn toast- give it to the dog( if your dog is like ours and will eat anything)...spread the newspapers because soon puppy will be sick( which is a good thing)
Itchy skin in dogs can be anything from food allergy, to environmental sensitivity. Try changing your dogs diet and see if that helps. At the same time, clean the bedding and keep the house vacuumed in case it is a flea allergy. I recently learned that there are fleas everywhere and that even if you don't have a bad flea situation and aren't " infested" with fleas, that still they are everywhere around in the house and in the soil in your garden and on your lawn.
Some dogs get stressed and bored if you leave them alone for long periods of time. This bordom can lead them to bite and chew their paws and scratch. Just as we can chew at our fingernails and scratch a scab while we are taking a long exam.
Talk to your vet, but I did this and wasn't very satisfied with the help I found there.
Talk to another vet if the problem continues.
Somethings that can be a cause to itchy skin in your dog:
Food
Fleas
Pollens
Immune disorder( my brothers dog has this and it is sadly very uncomfortable for their sweet dog and he was born with this)
Cindy's answer: I am in the minority here in supporting outdoor cats whenever sensible.... I feel if I was a cat I much prefer to go outdoors even with the risks (unless they are too great like you live on a busy road). Sally's answer: I like an indoor/outdoor cat myself but you must get your cat the proper shots. If you do this you should also keep a litter box inside just in case the cat wants to go inside. Joanna's answer: It depends on where you live and the quality of life you want for the cat. I live in a rural area and have lost several cats (and geese and chickens) to coyotes ... Sad .... I still have 2 cats who are 15 years old , so they have managed to survive the hawks, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, badgers, mountain lions and the cat chasing dogs. A cat kept inside will require more entertaining. You will have to have the smelly littler box, but if you scoop it regularly it won't be too bad. A cat in the city is in danger of being caught in neighborhood traffic and also, if there are many cats, cat fighting is obnoxious at 4 in the morning. Keeping a city cat indoors at night could be a good part of being a good neighbor.
Cindy's answer: This is the politically correct thing and the responsible thing to do. Very important. Sally's answer: Yes... unless you're planning to breed your cat. It might be an important thing for humans to do sometimes. Joanna's answer: YES!!!!!! A litter of kittens and puppies is so much fun when they are tiny and new ... special and magic ... but by the time they are 6 weeks old and starting to eat food and the mother isn't licking their butts anymore and there is tiny shit everywhere and you need to find friends who will take them home and they are mixed breeds that no one wants because your cat (or dog) got raped in the middle of the night because she was in heat and too many of the people in your neighborhood were irresponsible and didn't get their cats (or dogs neutered and their dogs broke off their chains and out of their yards to get at your dog) and the cats are just free to roam so there is no stopping them. Once your neighbor hood has a feral litter of cats, you are looking at generations of possible feral cats in the future.
Cindy's answer: Unless you plan on breeding and finding homes for your pups you should be responsible enough to neuter your pup or dog. Talk to your vet they will definately recommend neutering for health reasons as well. Sally's answer: Yes, unless you're planning to breed your dog. Joanna's answer: Look at my cat answer... I have a strong opinion that it is the right idea... I made several mistakes with this with pets over the years ... too many isn't good for the neighbor hood.
Cindy's answer: Many people do this and swear by it for a healthy dog. It is expensive and I would not do it unless you are looking to cure some kind of symptom like lethargy etc. The dog has a short intensive track and may have difficulty absorbing the benefits of vitamins.
Fish oil and a lot of brushing. A good vacuum is a must, and a lint brush! The furminator is great for getting the undercoat. Be gentle with this brush (my akita Queenie doesn't like it).
Sally's answer:
Regular grooming will help with excessive shedding. In between trips to the groomer, brush your dog and add fish oil to their food (about a teaspoon).
Joanna's answer:
I have found a solution: my dogs are both breeds that have HAIR not FUR and they don't shed, but their "hair" does grow and so they need to be groomed from time to time to get their "hair" clipped. This is another dilemma, but not having hair/fur on the furniture and all over your clothes is great. It is also great for people who have fur and dander allergies. My dogs are a Bouvier and a Wheaten Terrier. Other breeds that do not shed are Poodles, Portuguese Water dogs, Yorkshire Terriers...
Blu's Mom Says: There is also a product called the Furminator that works wonders. It's a bit pricey but if you do it a couple times a week during high shed seasons and brush in between it works wonders.
Sally Says: Thanks Blu's Mom-I use the Furminator as well on our Bernese Mountain dog, if only she would sit still and not try to bite it!
Ginger's mom Says: Really good quality food like Solid Gold also helps, but I also love the Furminator!
Sally Says: Hi Ginger's mom- I haven't heard of this dog food- how do you know about it and is it an organic products for dogs? We might like to hear more about this product if it really helps with shedding. Thanks for your comment.
Cindy's answer: You should discuss this with the vet..... it is usually about 9 months before the first heat. Sally's answer: Some say that any pet over 2 pounds and over 8 weeks but I think that's a little young. We always waited until the animal was 6 months. Joanna's answer: I think it is at 6 months or after a first heat, but you should be asking the vet.
Cindy's answer: You should discuss this with your vet... usually 9 months before the first heat Sally's answer: Some say that any pet over 2 pounds and over 8 weeks but I think that's a little young. We always waited until the animal was 6 months.
Cindy's answer: They do not need attention like a parakeet and bigger birds. You know they are happy and healthy when they are singing. Sally's answer: I have no idea, I always wanted a bird but thought our dogs would hunt them. Joanna's answer: Yeah, Sally, Beagles are bird dogs.
Cindy's answer: I resort to putting it in food..some cheese, peanut butter, anything a dog might eat. You can do it like Sal says but it is not easy if your dog is sick and needs pills everyday. Sally's answer: I really don't have a best way but we usually put the pill down the dogs throat and hold their snout until they swallow. I'm hoping my friend, Patty tells us her way(since she has six dogs!). Joanna's answer: I wrap the pill in a piece of cheese or bologna. I am really happy with the way a piece of bologna wraps around it. Now there are these dog treats especially made for pill insertion. My dogs love them! I think that the people who make the Greenies teeth cleaning chews are making the ones I used. My vet carries these and I have seen them at the pet stores too.
Cindy's answer: Very important in case you lose your dog that he is registered. If your pet should bite someone it is important to know his vaccinations are up to date for rabies. It is responsible dog ownership and what you should also expect from your neighbors. Sally's answer: Yes, you should because if you get caught without doing this you'll probably get a fine. It is also a good idea to have ID tags on your pet in case they get lost. Joanna's answer: It is required and if you live in a city neighborhood you really have to careful as the dog catchers are out looking for untagged dogs.
Sally's answer: That's a wonderful gift. I'm sure he would appreciate anything that is homemade pertaining to a veterinary practice. The only down side would be the size, will they have a spot for it? You might want to take a picture of it and put in a card first with the thank you. If that doesn't work, a gift certificate to a nice dinner spot close to where they live would be nice. And really, a nice hand written heartfelt thank-you is good as well. This is his job and he loves what he does. Joanna's answer: Yes, especially if this is a close friend and they have admired your artistry or your partners.... Especially when they go above and beyond...

Why is my gravy so lumpy?
The flour can clump up. Best to strain your gravy and use a whisk while adding flour.
